Conservatives should “compromise” on transgenderism, according to a National Review column published Wednesday.
Readers are immediately introduced to the submissive nature of the piece with the subheadline: “Cautious conservatives should work to preserve a peaceful and free social order.”
The author, National Review Online columnist J.J. McCullough, argues that conservatives are too “demagogic” and “immature” on the transgender issue. McCullough believes that transgenderism is a fact of life and conservatives must acquaint themselves to this new sign of progress.
His proposed compromise requires conservatives stop using the wrong gender pronouns and accept that transgender people aren’t going away. The Left, under this hypothetical compromise, would have to promise to stop wielding state power to impose the dictates of the transgender agenda.
Conservatives must make this accommodation because their reactionary demagoguery “rationalizes petty tyranny on the left,” according to McCullough.
The National Review writer boldly concludes that American history “ultimately” vindicates “cautious conservatives who assign themselves the difficult task of thoughtfully working through the new and unexpected in the cause of preserving a social order as peaceful and free as the one that came prior.”
By vindication, I can only assume McCullough means the new social order welcomes the conservatives who capitulate to it. They’re never the heroes of the story.
The underlying ideological thrust of the article is the common conservative refrain of “leave us alone!” Once, this was a defiant shout against intrusive liberals. Now, it’s a weak plea to alleviate progressive abuse.
There is nothing inherently wrong with “leave us alone.” The connotation is a very American sentiment to be left alone to pursue happiness for you and your family — free of nagging bureaucrats and progressive radicals telling you what to do.
But too often that phrase is a sign of resignation than a demand for liberty. Conservatives want to stop the tidal wave of bigotry accusations and harassment, so they’ll concede to the Left’s demands in order to purchase temporary relief. They’ll admit their enemies are morally right and accept the status of losers, as long as they can get on with their life.
McCullough concedes the moral high ground to the Left on the transgender issue and urges conservatives to get with the times. He even lets progressives dictate conservative speech, ensuring they wield greater power over their opponents. All for the sake of remaining “decent” in the eyes of polite society.
The writer hopes this change will convince progressives to hold back on their assault — an unlikely event considering the Left believes their cause is morally righteous. Why give up when you’re dominating an enemy that admits you’re morally superior?
The Left knows the cautious conservative’s eternal desire to be left alone is an asset ripe for exploitation. Leftists will make their lives hell if they oppose the progressive agenda. Ban gender-neutral bathrooms? Prepare for an economic boycott of your state. Speak in favor of that idea? Prepare to be doxed and harassed by left-wing journalists and activists. Use the wrong gender pronoun? Prepare to lose your job.
Compromise sounds so much easier than standing up for your convictions. You can still play golf and focus on the big game when your son’s school is indoctrinating him with gender theory insanity.
Conservatives accepting compromise has not worked out well for them. On the issue of gay marriage, the other side has moved on from its triumph to attack the fundamentals of religious liberty. Progressives don’t care that conservatives have surrendered on gay marriage — they want to ensure every Christian baker bakes that cake anyway.
A similar result will arise with a capitulation to transgenderism. Progressives are never sated by victory, no matter how “decent” their opponents claim to be.
Starting off with “leave us alone” as your motto the whole world outside of “us” to the Left. It admits you neither have nor want power over the culture, the bureaucracy or the institutions. Those are in the hands of progressives, and no matter how much you yell at them, they won’t leave you alone. The progressives feel a moral obligation to impose their will on you and your family.
Too often conservatives celebrate those who just “want to live their lives” and not worry about the world being transformed around them. In March, National Review posted an article in praise of the people who say “meh” in response to America’s current turmoil. That’s an understandable response to CNN’s 24/7 coverage of Stormy Daniels, but not to the fundamental changes in American society that will determine your life and what you are allowed to say.
This would be akin to celebrating the Americans who remained neutral during the Revolutionary War as the real heroes. They didn’t let those creeps trying to found a new nation get in the way of making money!
In response to the Boy Scouts’ recent announcement they were no longer the Boy Scouts, immigration hawk Mark Krikorian tweeted this incisive statement: “A minority willing to push an agenda will always dominate a majority who just want to be left alone.”
It’s time for conservatives to wake up to that grim reality.
