Former Vice President Joe Biden released statements Friday condemning a White House aide’s disparaging comments about Arizona Sen. John McCain’s failing health earlier this week.

“People have wondered when decency would hit rock bottom with this administration,” Biden said in the statement. “It happened yesterday.

The former vice president called Sen. McCain “a genuine hero – a man of valor whose sacrifices for his country are immeasurable.”

Biden also stated that McCain is fighting “for his life,” and that “he deserves better — so much better.”

He then extended the message to the whole White House, saying the administration has a “trail of disrespect toward John and others,” and the White House aide’s comments were “not the exception to the rule” but were “the epitome of it.”

White House special assistant Kelly Sadler made a failed joke in a closed-door meeting while discussing Gina Haspel’s nomination, saying that McCain’s opposition to Haspel “doesn’t matter, he’s dying anyway.”

She has since come under heavy scrutiny for the comments.
