A University of Akron professor in Ohio tried to award higher grades to his female students based on their gender, and school officials promptly prevented him from doing so Wednesday.

Dr. Liping Liu, a professor in the department of management, sent an email to his class stating certain students would see their grades increased by “one level or two” if they fit into certain categories, according to Fox 8 Cleveland. (RELATED: Professor Calls Whiteness A Problem)

The first category was “female students.” There was a national movement occurring to raise the grades of female students to encourage them to enter the information science field, Lie claimed. The other two categories had to do with students who scored high on exams and those who attended class but may have missed “reporting attendance.”

Students expressed displeasure at Liu’s absurd standards, which surprised and shocked them.

“I guess you could say it’s a noble thing to do, like you want to incorporate more women into the field; however, at the same time, it’s completely unacceptable,” Samiyyah Ceasor, a senior majoring in Psychology, told Fox 8.

“I think it’s a good idea executed poorly; I definitely think we need more women in the STEM fields, but I don’t think that’s the right way of going at it for sure,” said Milos Kupusovic, a junior Communications major.

The University sent Fox 8 a statement on behalf of Executive Vice President Rex Ramsier, saying Liu’s idea was discriminatory and “unacceptable” by Akron standards.

“The University has verified that there were no adjustments to grades based upon the gender of individuals in the class. While the professor’s stated intention of encouraging female students to go into the information sciences field may be laudable, his approach as described in his email was clearly unacceptable. The University of Akron follows both the law and its policies and does not discriminate on the basis of sex. The professor in question has been advised accordingly, and he has reaffirmed his commitment to adhering to these strict standards.”
