President Donald Trump, who canceled his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, expressed hope Friday after North Korea said it was still open to talks with the U.S.
“Very good news to receive the warm and productive statement from North Korea,” Trump tweeted Friday. “We will soon see where it will lead, hopefully to long and enduring prosperity and peace. Only time (and talent) will tell!”

The president decided Thursday to cancel his highly anticipated meeting with Kim, which was expected to be held in Singapore on June 12. He cited critical statements from Pyongyang, particularly those insulting American officials, as the reason for this decision.
“I was very much looking forward to being there with you. Sadly, based on the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed in your most recent statement, I feel it is inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting,” Trump wrote in a letter to Kim. “If you change your mind having to do with this most important summit, please do not hesitate to call me or write,” he added.
In a follow-up address, the president left the door open for future talks. “If and when Kim Jong Un chooses to engage in constructive dialogue and actions, I am waiting.” It seems he did not need to wait very long for a response.
North Korea responded early Friday morning with a message explaining that North Korea is ready to talk “at any time.”
The North Korean foreign ministry said in a statement that it considers the cancellation of the summit regrettable, stressing that the North “would like to make known to the U.S. side once again that we have the intent to sit with the U.S. side to solve [the] problem regardless of ways at any time.”
