Senator Jeff Flake warned on Sunday that the country would be thrown into a constitutional crisis if President Donald Trump fires Robert Mueller or Rod Rosenstein.

WATCH:

Chuck Todd, host of NBC’s “Meet the Press,” noted during an interview that Flake has become “more alarmed” with Trump’s behavior over the past year and asked why his Republican colleagues haven’t shown the same concern.

“I can tell you behind the scenes there is a lot of alarm,” Flake said. “There is concern that the president is laying the groundwork to move on [Special Counsel] Bob Mueller or [Deputy Attorney General Rod] Rosenstein.”

“If that were to happen obviously that would cause a constitutional crisis,” he asserted.

Flake added that he thinks his colleagues are not stepping up because they are worried about getting through the primaries in their midterm elections and therefore won’t stand for “empirical truth.”
