Ken Starr, the independent prosecutor for former President Bill Clinton, said President Trump “clearly has the authority” to fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller in an interview Sunday.

On CBS’s “Face The Nation,” Starr said Trump “clearly has the authority to direct the firing, if not a direct firing himself” of Mueller, but that he has not heard of any clear intention from the administration to do so. Starr added that it is not a question of legitimacy of power but rather it is a political question about facing the consequences of firing the special counsel.
“It would be, I think, but it’s a political question,” Starr said. “I don’t think it’s obstruction of justice, and I disagree with those who seem to find obstruction of justice and almost anything that the president has done.”
“But it certainly would be, I think, a political firefight of the highest order because you have people in both parties saying that this is an authorized investigation, let it run its course,” Starr continued.
