Georgia Republican Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, the lead finisher from the Georgia Republican gubernatorial primary, bought a condo at a discounted price from a lobbyist, according to a New York Times report.
Cagle purchased the condo for 24 percent less than its estimated value in 2008 and sold it in 2017 at a 29-percent profit, according to the report. Cagle allegedly bought the condo from Terry E. Hobbs, a natural gas lobbyist in Georgia.
“Let me just be very clear. This was a legitimate transaction, a purchase of real estate that was a willing buyer and a willing seller that had nothing to do with anything other than a willing buyer and a willing seller,” Cagle told TheNYT on Thursday. Hobbs donated $12,000 to Cagle in the 2018 election cycle.
Cagle will face Georgia Republican Secretary of State Brian Kemp in a runoff on July 24. The winner of that runoff will be up against Democrat Stacey Abrams in the November gubernatorial election. Abrams is the first black American woman to get a gubernatorial nomination from a major political party.
