President Donald Trump said Wednesday night that Americans wants immigrants to come into the country through a merit-based system rather than through happenstance.

“If we do want people coming across our border, going through our ports of entry. but we want people to come in through merit, not just through luck or happenstance,” Trump told the crowd at a Minnesota rally.

He also suggested that Democrats must be pushed out of Congress to secure the border. “You need to retire the Democrats and elect Republicans to secure the border. We will have the greatest borders and the greatest wall,” he said to a packed auditorium.

The rally took place shortly after Trump signed an executive order to start detaining families together while prosecuting all people who illegally cross the U.S.-Mexico border. Trump’s order requires federal authorities to detain families together while being prosecuted rather than operating under current guidelines that require separation. (RELATED: Trump Signs Executive Action To Stop Family Separation)

The executive action, however, is likely to face immediate legal action given its violation of current U.S. guidance that requires children to be housed separately from adult incarceration facilities.
