First lady Melania Trump called for “common sense immigration reform” legislation on Thursday after making an unexpected trip to the Texas border to visit a child detention center in McAllen.

Trump spoke with staff and social workers at Upbring New Hope Children’s Center before touring the facility and visiting with some of the children, according to a statement from the White House.

Upbring New Hope is a grantee of the Health & Human Services’ Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR). The facility houses about 55 children, ages 5 to 17, reported The Hill. Of the total children currently being housed, six were separated from their families, with the remaining children being held after crossing the border as unaccompanied minors.

“Today’s visit impacted me greatly,” Melania said in the statement. “I was very impressed with the center and the hardworking staff and leadership there — and thank them for all of their hard work.” (RELATED: Melania Visits Migrant Child Shelter – CNN Dismisses It As A ‘Ham Handed’ ‘Photo-Op’)

“It is my hope that Members of Congress will finally reach across the aisle and work together to solve this problem with common sense immigration reform that secures our borders and keeps families together,” she added.
