CNN commentator John Avlon said the Democratic Party is being take over by the “occupy generation” and compared it to the Tea Party surge of 2010, on “New Day” Wednesday.

A panel discussed the upset win by socialist House candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in New York, who ran on a platform of abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement. (RELATED: Socialist Who Ran On Abolishing ICE Wins Primary Race)

“Yes, the parties are becoming more polarized. This is more evidence of that,” Avlon said on CNN. “The energy is on the left of the Democratic Party. We have seen the Tea Party take over the Republicans a long time ago. This is the occupy generation that rallied around Bernie Sanders’ campaign.”

Avlon praised Cortez’s campaign strategy and said she was able to shed the radical image of socialism to reach working class voters.

“Yes, she is a Democratic socialist. But she really did in her viral campaign ad, play the idea of working class. Implicitly dissing Joe Crowley for being establishment and out of touch,” Avlon concluded. “Talking about income equality and really the authenticity of her experience as it relates to this district.”
