President Donald Trump addressed his Supreme Court pick in light of Roe v. Wade on Sunday when he said that abortion may soon be “end up with states.”

“Maybe someday it will be to the states. You never know how that’s going to turn out. That’s a very complex question,” Trump told Fox News Maria Bartiromo in a Sunday interview, according to its transcript.

“The Roe v. Wade is probably the one that people are talking about in terms of having an effect, but we’ll see what happens, but it could very well end up with states at some point,” Trump added.

Bartiromo previously asked the president whether he would ask his nominees if they would vote to overturn Roe v. Wade.  “Well, that’s a big one, and probably not,” Trump said. He added that even if he won’t ask the potential justices their views on overturning a woman’s right to abortion, he will put conservative justices on the bench.

“I’m putting conservative people on, and I’m very proud of Neil Gorsuch.  He has been outstanding.  His opinions are so well-written, so brilliant, and I’m going to try and do something like that,” Trump said.

The interview comes after Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement from the Supreme Court on Wednesday. Kennedy, who former President Ronald Reagan appointed, served on the Supreme Court for 30 years and spearheaded major decisions on abortion, gay rights and the First Amendment. The justice was lauded as the Democrats’ last hope on an otherwise conservative court, and his resignation has been met with complaints from the left. (RELATED: Kennedy Calls It Quits: Longtime Swing Justice Hands Trump The Biggest Gift Of His Presidency)

Conservatives have applauded Kennedy’s resignation as the moment they’ve been waiting for and a chance to stack the Supreme Court with conservative justices.
