More than 1,000 people gathered Monday night at a vigil for nine people who were attacked at a child’s birthday in Boise, Idaho, on Saturday.

The 3-year-old birthday girl, Ruya Kadir, died Monday from injuries allegedly inflicted by Timothy Kinner, who is in custody. He is charged with first-degree murder and other felonies, reported The Associated Press.

Kinner, 30, was asked to leave the Boise apartment complex where he had been staying with a friend because of his erratic behavior, reported BBC.

Kinner returned to the complex and attacked the birthday party guests around 8:45 p.m. Saturday night. He stabbed Kadir, five other children, ages 4 to 12, and three adults, said Boise Police Chief Bill Bones at a press conference Sunday.

Kinner was arrested within minutes after the attack, reported ABC.

The low-income apartment complex houses many refugees from Syria, Iraq and Ethiopia. The victims were refugees, but there was no evidence that Kinner knew the victims nor that his attack was a hate crime, Bones said.

“He returned last night to exact vengeance … at any target that was available,” Bones said, according to ABC.

Kinner could face the death penalty under Idaho law. He has a criminal record and has spent time in prison, reported ABC. (RELATED: ICE In Pictures: This Is What Some Democrats Are Trying To Abolish)

At the vigil honoring the victims, mourners filled the front steps of Boise City Hall with white flowers to symbolize peace, reported The Associated Press. Boise Mayor Dave Bieter spoke at the gathering and encouraged residents to help the refugee families with medical and other expenses they will have as they recover.
