CNN commentator John Avlon said a possible trade war with China could hurt Republicans at the polls come November.

“[Trump] has this longstanding belief that trade imbalances are really simple,” Avlon said on”New Day” Friday. “If you look at the countries, the states who are most likely to be hurt by these initial tariffs … Iowa, you got soy beans, pork. You got Nebraska, Illinois.” (RELATED: CNN’s John Avlon Says Dems Being Taken Over By ‘Occupy Generation’)

“Iowa and Nebraska are states that Trump won handily. Harley Davidson. Wisconsin. These are states that really Trump depended on,” he continued. “I don’t think they’re playing chess in terms of thinking several moves out.”

Avlon said Trump’s trade policies have created high stakes for the GOP and could end up tipping scales in the favor of Democrats.

“If the pain is really hurt, remember we’ve got a midterm coming up folks,” Avlon concluded. “So this is high stakes. Whether or not they believe that the larger macro environment is good for a trade war.”
