A U.S. service member was killed in an “apparent insider attack” in Afghanistan Saturday, and two others were wounded, Resolute Support Public Affairs revealed.

The wounded are in stable condition and receiving treatment, and an investigation is underway, the statement explained. The name of the individual who died will be withheld until 24 hours after the notification of next of kin.

An insider attack suggests that it was carried out by a member of the Afghan security forces, the very people the U.S. military is training to take the reins in the war for the future of the country.

This is the third U.S. service member killed in action in Afghanistan this year.

A U.S. service member was killed in a “combat engagement” in Nangarhar province in January. Four others were wounded in the fight. Another U.S. service member died in April, and another was wounded., Fox News introduced.

Army Lt. Gen. Austin “Scott” Miller, the new commander of American and NATO troops in Afghanistan, recently told lawmakers that he does not see an end to the 17-year war in Afghanistan. (RELATED: After 17 Years In Afghanistan, Trump’s Pick For Top Commander Sees No End To War)
