Former President Barack Obama is diving into politics once again by appearing in a video warning against the supposed damaging effects of partisan gerrymandering and calling on voters to politicians who support his idea of “fair” districting maps.
The video, released Wednesday by the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, blames Republicans for creating “structural advantages that would eventually determine every future election” through new district maps.
Despite Obama attempting to make the issue of partisan gerrymandering seem bipartisan, he squarely blames the GOP and says the current congressional map protects “tax breaks for the most powerful, the gun lobby and environmental polluters.”
“Regardless of our party affiliations, it’s not good for our democracy,” Obama said.
Obama also said it is “inspiring to see” so many activists “organizing, registering new voters and running for office.”
The National Democratic Redistricting Committee is part of the Democratic National Committee and run by Obama’s former Attorney General Eric Holder and was launched shortly after President Donald Trump’s victory in January 2017.
While many Democrats have urged the former president to more publicly insert himself into current political debates, Obama has largely taken a backroom role.
This video, however, could signal impatience by Obama on the direction of the Democratic Party. Vanity Fair reported in June that he is quietly “plotting his return — as a Democratic kingmaker.”
