Trump Rips On Theresa May’s Brexit Plan, Would ‘Probably Kill’ A Trade Deal With US
President Donald Trump ripped British Prime Minister Theresa May’s proposed Brexit plan on Thursday, saying it will “probably kill” a future trade deal with the United States.
“If they do a deal like that, we would be dealing with the European Union instead of dealing with the U.K., so it will probably kill the deal,” Trump told The Sun on Thursday, according to an AFP report. “I would have done it much differently. I actually told Theresa May how to do it but she didn’t agree, she didn’t listen to me. She wanted to go a different route.”
Trump also said the Brexit deal May is currently working on “is a much different deal than the one the people voted on … It is not the deal that was in the referendum.” (RELATED: London Mayor Approves Giant Blimp Of Trump In A Diaper To Fly Over London During President’s UK Visit)
He also said former U.K. Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson would make “a great prime minister,” and that London Mayor Sadiq Khan is doing “a terrible job” on crime, according to AFP.
May has faced backlash over her handling of Brexit, with Johnson resigning Monday in the wake of the prime minister’s plans for Britain’s exit from the European Union.
“We are now in the ludicrous position of asserting that we must accept huge amounts of precisely such EU law, without changing it an iota … we are truly headed for the status of colony,” Johnson wrote in his resignation letter, obtained by The Guardian. “Brexit should be about opportunity and hope … that dream is dying, suffocated by a needless self-doubt.”
Trump is currently on a four-day “working visit” to the U.K., where he will talk policy and relationships with May.
