Democratic Rep. Beto O’Rourke of Texas called for President Donald Trump’s impeachment Tuesday following Trump’s joint press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
O’Rourke, who is running for U.S. Senate against incumbent Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, slammed the president for reportedly siding with Russia the prior day over U.S. intelligence services.
“Standing on stage in another country, with the leader of another country, who wants to and has sought to undermine this country, and to side with him over the United States – if I were asked to vote on this, I would vote to impeach the president,” O’Rourke told The Dallas Morning News.
“Impeachment, much like an indictment, shows that there is enough there for the case to proceed and at this point there is certainly enough there for the case to proceed,” O’Rourke continued. (RELATED: Beto O’Rourke Campaigning In Hollywood … Again)
O’Rourke also went after Cruz for not castigating Trump despite the Senator already noting that he disagreed with the president’s statements.
“I think we need to be acting vigorously to prevent Russian aggression,” Cruz told a reporter on Monday. “And I think it’s a mistake to be apologizing for Vladimir Putin.” (RELATED: Remember That One Time Beto O’Rourke Called For Legalizing All Narcotics)
But O’Rourke told The Dallas Morning News that the Texas senator’s response was “not good enough.”
Cruz doubled down on Tuesday, again calling the joint conference with Putin a “mistake,” reported The Texas Tribune. When pressed, Cruz rejected the idea that Trump committed treason, explaining the seriousness of the accusation.
“Treason is a grave crime punishable by death under U.S. law. And it wasn’t treason when Barack Obama refused to stand up to our enemies,” Cruz said pointing out the double standard regarding former President Barack Obama. “And it wasn’t treason when President Trump stood at a podium and failed to condemn Russian aggression and interference in our election.”
O’Rourke has discussed the notion of impeaching Trump multiple times in the past.
“He is the only major party candidate in America to call for impeachment. Elizabeth Warren hasn’t done it. Bernie Sanders hasn’t done it. Nancy Pelosi hasn’t done it. This is a fringe candidate in the Democratic Party,” responded Jeff Roe, Cruz’s campaign manager, according to the Dallas Morning News.
Cruz leads O’Rourke by nine points as of the latest poll.
