Joe Lockhart, the White House press secretary for former President Bill Clinton, accused President Donald Trump of committing treason on CNN’s “New Day” Tuesday.

Co-host John Berman asked Lockhart for one word to describe Trump’s press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin, to which he replied, “treason.”

“Treason, yeah. I think we’ve moved past whether the president is a witting or an unwitting agent of the Russian government,” Lockhart said. (RELATED: Joe Scarborough Says GOP Efforts To Impeach Rod Rosenstein Is Akin To Doing Putin’s Bidding)

“It doesn’t matter now. Vladimir Putin for a decade has been trying to undermine NATO and undermine the EU as his primary adversary to expand his economic and political influence around the world, to bring Russia back to Russia. Well, Donald Trump went to Europe and did all of Vladimir Putin’s bidding,” he continued.

Lockhart claimed Trump has been undermining the United States from within and called his behavior “the very definition of treason.”

“He undermined the EU. He said that the EU is the enemy, not Russia. He undermined NATO during his trip over there. And then he went and refused to stand up for America,” Lockhart said. “So he is doing their bidding. And we have to get away from whether he knows what he’s doing or he’s not and focus on what he’s doing.”

“That is the very definition of treason,” he concluded. “When you put someone else’s interests, whether it’s your own or another country’s ahead of our nation. That is treasonous. And that may sound like a radical statement, but it’s simple and it’s true.”
