Democratic California Rep. Maxine Waters on Wednesday took a shot at fellow Democrats who want to abolish the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which is tasked with enforcing the nation’s immigration laws.

Democrats who want to abolish ICE — a deeply unpopular political position — “didn’t really think it through,” Waters said at CNBC’s Capital Exchange Breakfast. Her comments were first reported by left-wing website Vox.

“Those people who decided and took the position that it had to be abolished did not think it through in ways that said it has to be reformed,” Waters said. (RELATED: ‘Abolish ICE’ Vandals Throw Brick Through Window Of GOP Office, Leave Graffiti Message)

“They didn’t really think it through and talk about it in a way that made good sense to people,” the congresswoman added.

Waters’ position on abolishing ICE puts her squarely at odds with the Democratic Party’s left-wing base, which has been pushing party leaders for months to attack ICE.

Democratic Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts have both come out in favor of abolishing ICE. The two senators are considered likely to run for president in 2020.

Gillibrand said on Sunday that “when” Democrats flip the House and Senate, abolishing ICE will be at the top of the party agenda.
