A Swedish opera singer claimed that her husband committed suicide after being falsely accused of sexual misconduct in the wake of the #MeToo Movement.

Anne Sofie von Otter, 63, a mezzo-soprano opera singer, called out the #MeToo Movement saying that it contributed to her husband Benny Fredriksson’s suicide in Sydney March 17, The Sydney Herald reported Tuesday.

Fredriksson, 58, reportedly spiraled into a deep depression after stepping down from his job as the theatre director for Stockholm’s art center after facing sexual misconduct allegations.

“You can break a person,” von Otter said to Die Zeit. “What are we doing with our beautiful world?” (RELATED: Hillary Clinton Caught Eating Dinner With Harvey Weinstein Weeks After Election Loss)

Fredriksson was accused of harassing his employees, according to Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet in December. The tabloid claimed that he forced one actor to rehearse naked, told another to have an abortion or give up a role, and protected men accused of sexual misconduct.

Von Otter said that her husband was a difficult boss but that he never sexually harassed anyone. An internal investigation also did not find any truth behind the sexual misconduct allegations against Fredriksson.

“Benny was not a womanizer, he didn’t look at women’s breasts or behinds,” von Otter said.

“We all have good and bad sides, but we no longer live in the Middle Ages,” von Otter added. “We do not publicly pillory anyone and spit on or stone him or her.”

Von Otter was also called “the most prominent #MeToo widow” based on the death of her husband, the Irish Times reported.
