Writer-at-large for New York Times Magazine Nick Confessore sent a tweet downplaying the existence and severity of illegal border crossings on Wednesday.

“POTUS is threatening to shut down the government — and endanger his own party this fall — to get money for a wall he said Mexico would pay for, to solve a crisis that isn’t actually happening,” Confessore tweeted.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, there were more than 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States, as of January 2014.

From The Economist:

On April 5th, the DHS announced that Border Patrol agents apprehended 37,393 people in March, an increase of more than 200% on the previous year. The number of unaccompanied children caught entering illegally jumped by 300%, and the number of families detained while attempting the journey surged by nearly 700%.

The crisis on the border is serious enough to warrant the attention of Defense Secretary James Mattis. In April, Secretary Mattis authorized the deployment of up to 4,000 National Guard troops to defend the U.S-Mexican border.
