President Donald Trump doubled down on his support for U.S. Army combat veteran John James in Michigan’s Republican primary for U.S. Senate just over one week after fully endorsing him.

Trump called James “a potential Republican Star” and hinted he would be the best candidate to take on Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow in the Nov. 6 general election. The tweet comes after Trump gave James his full endorsement in late July, telling voters to get out and vote Aug. 7.

“I am proud to have the endorsement of President Trump. President Trump is endorsing my campaign because he knows that I will work with him to secure the borders, defend the Constitution and protect Michigan jobs. President Trump knows I am the only conservative in this race, and President Trump knows we can and will defeat 43-year career politician and liberal obstructionist senator, Debbie Stabenow,” James told The Daily Caller News Foundation in a phone call minutes after Trump’s endorsement.

James had a seven-point advantage over primary opponent Sandy Pensler just over a week ahead of Michigan’s Aug. 7 Republican primary election for U.S. Senate, according to a NBC and Marist poll. (RELATED: POLL: Combat Veteran John James Leading Michigan Republican Primary With Barely A Week To Go)

James and Pensler have duked it out over support for Trump after Pensler was seen questioning Trump’s wealth in a video, claiming Trump tried to buy the Mets baseball team from him but did not have the money. Pensler also criticized the way Trump speaks, saying he spoke at a “fourth grade level.” (RELATED: EXCLUSIVE: Republican Senate Candidate Questions Trump’s Wealth, Says He Speaks Like A Fourth Grader)

The winner of the Aug. 7 primary will take on Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow in the Nov. 6 general election.
