New York Democratic socialist candidate for governor Cynthia Nixon announced Monday that she wants to give free tuition to seven times as many students.
“When I am Governor, we will expand free tuition to cover an additional 170,000 students, more than seven times as many students as are currently being served,” the politician and actress said.

Nixon asserts that as a parent, she organized with other parents to prevent New York City schools from taking nearly $400 million in cuts. She says that she ramped up funding for low-income schools under Foundation Aid, an initiative Cuomo stalled before cutting school funding by $1.3 billion.

The Democratic Socialist candidate says that the governor has increased the divide between funding for poor and rich school counties by 24 percent, bolstering New York’s status as the second-most unequal state with regard to school funding. Nixon also laments the involvement of police of in disciplinary procedures for black students.
