MSNBC guest Mark Thompson said on Wednesday that he believes Congressman Ron DeSantis should drop out of the Florida governor’s race for a recent gaffe.

DeSantis was blasted after he warned voters not to “monkey…up” Florida by “trying to embrace a socialist agenda.” Critics accused the Florida congressman of using a racial dog whistle to talk about his opponent, Andrew Gillum. Thompson, a radio host on SiriusXM, urged DeSantis to apologize and also compared what the congressman said to the “n-word.”

“When you say monkey in reference to an African-American, he might as well have just said the n-word,” Thompson told MSNBC anchor Velshi. “Donald Trump needs to condemn this. DeSantis needs to immediately apologize and/or drop out of the race.”

“This is absolutely racist, and if he gets away with it this time, he’s going to continue to do it,” Thompson said.
