Political strategist and pollster John Thomas claimed President Donald Trump’s blessing helped elevate congressional candidates in their primary races and called him a “kingmaker,” on “Fox & Friends” Thursday.

“President Trump’s endorsement in these primaries, he is the undisputed kingmaker no question about it,” Thomas said. (RELATED: CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin Shocked By Trump’s Steady Poll Numbers)

“You see that in California with John Cox … Ron DeSantis, et cetera. But looking forward to November, I would recommend it is clear, you must, if you are a Republican candidate, you’ve got to hug the president,” he added.

“The president has uncanny ability to generate base turnout,” he continued. “That’s what these midterm elections are all about. So there’s two things these candidates have to do. One, hug President Trump because he’ll help turn out your base and two, run on the Trump agenda. That’s how you get those swing voters because his agenda is incredibly popular as well.”

Thomas said Trump’s blunt delivery and challenging tone might be a plus in the midterm elections and cited his steady approval numbers as proof of his popularity with the public.

“Each candidate needs to be their own candidate, right? But, as far as Trump’s tone, let’s not forget that Trump has had the highest approval rating of nearly any president, Republican president ever,” Thomas concluded. “In these midterm elections it’s about making sure that Republican voters don’t stay home. And there’s nobody better to generate intensity and enthusiasm than the president.”
