An Emirates Airline plane has been quarantined at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport following reports of multiple sick passengers on a flight from Dubai.

The flight, carrying about 500 passengers, landed safely at about 9:10 a.m. Wednesday after declaring a medical emergency, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Initial reports said as many as 100 people on the plane were ill, but Emirates later confirmed that the number of sick passengers was 10. Local health officials tended to the sick passengers upon arrival, the airline said.

“Emirates can confirm that about 10 passengers on from Dubai to New York were taken ill,” the airline said in a statement on Twitter. “On arrival, as a precaution, they were attended to by local health authorities. All others will disembark shortly. The safety & care of our customers is our first priority.”

The cause of the illness remains unknown, but authorities do not suspect terrorism or other security threats at this time, CBS News Radio reported. The New York City Police Department’s counterterrorism division said it was monitoring what appeared to be a “medical situation.”

Officials from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have responded to the scene, The Associated Press reported.

New York City Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio has been briefed on the situation, a spokesman said. (RELATED: Asian Airports Knock JFK Off List Of World’s Busiest)
