Two dozen demonstrators poured into the office of Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Chuck Grassley Thursday, in an attempt to stop Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s ongoing confirmation hearings.
The protests, which appeared peaceful, began shortly after 9 a.m. and featured chants, speeches and picket signs.
Grassley staffers told U.S. Capitol Police that the protesters also banged on doors and windows. Officers responded to the scene almost immediately and closed the main entrance to the senator’s suite because the demonstrations were audible throughout the Hart Senate Office Building, effectively sealing the activists inside.
Almost two dozen officers took up positions around the office, but generally did not interfere with the protesters. The demonstration turned into a sit-in, as the activists remained in Grassley’s suite for several hours.
The senator’s communications director Michael Zona told The Daily Caller News Foundation that he offered to speak with the demonstrators, but they refused.
Grassley gaveled the Judiciary Committee into session at 9:30 a.m. as scheduled, and spent the day presiding over the hearing and casting votes on the Senate floor.
