Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani shared what was going through his head during the 9/11 attacks, on “Fox & Friends” Tuesday.

“I was heading south, originally I went south, and [former NYC firefighter Pete Ganci] said to me, ‘Get these people to go north,'” Giuliani said. (RELATED: Joe Scarborough Calls Trump A ‘Far Graver Threat’ To America Than 9/11 Attackers)

“When they came out of building about a third of them were remaining and they were watching, but they were hindering the fire trucks from getting in and then eventually the ambulances. So Pete says, ‘Get them the hell out of here,'” he said.

“As soon as I got out of building we were trapped in for about 20 minutes, [former NYC Police Commissioner Bernie Kerik] and I and three of my deputy mayors … I said exactly what [Ganci] said, I started yelling at people ‘go north, go north.’ And then I got on television with a CBS reporter and I said, ‘Everybody better go north,'” he added.

Giuliani said it was a relief for New Yorkers to see ground zero rebuilt and to have a memorial to go to so they can pay their respects.

“It’s actually a wonderful story if you think about. I struggle for about three months, four months trying to bring people back. Mike Bloomberg did for about a year, bringing people back. More than twice as many people down there now, than on the day of September 11, 2001,” he said.

“More than four times as many businesses — it’s become one of our centers now. I mean, that’s one of the great places to go … not just to see the museum but to see the wonderful Brookfield center and a whole bunch of the other things that are there,” Giuliani concluded.
