Three men involved in the 2015 murder of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s aide were given hefty prison sentences Wednesday.

Carey Gabay, 43, was caught in a shootout between two enemy gangs, the Folks Nation gang and the 8-Trey faction of the Crips gang, on Sept. 7, 2015 in Brooklyn. Gabay was shot in the head by a random bullet prior after attending a festival in Crown Heights. He died on Sept. 15, 2015, according to a press release from the Brooklyn District’s Attorney Office Wednesday.

Micah Alleyne, 26, and Kenny Bazile, 33, were both convicted of manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon while Stanley Elianor, 27, was convicted of reckless endangerment.

Alleyne received a prison sentence for 20 to 30 years, Bazile will serve 20 to 25 years in prison and Elianor will spend three and a half to seven years in prison, the Brooklyn District’s Attorney Office reported.

“Another defendant, Tyshawn Crawford, 23, previously pleaded guilty to charges relating to the shooting of Mr. Gabay in exchange for a promised sentence of 14 years in prison,” the Brooklyn District’s Attorney Office said in the news release.

Gabay was the son of Jamaican immigrants and joined Cuomo’s administration in 2011, a 2015 statement from Cuomo said.

Gabay helped draft legislation for the New York Safe Act, according to wife Trenelle Gabay in a New York Daily News op-ed published on Sept. 3, 2017. (RELATED: An ACLU Chapter Is Fighting Over NRA Lawsuit Against Cuomo)

“And yet the iron pipeline and gun show loopholes make it easy for guns to get into the wrong hands — the same hands that would use it with reckless abandon and shoot into a crowd of innocent people celebrating their culture,” Trenelle Gabay wrote.

The NYSafe Act set strict standards for attaining and using guns in the state. It prevents criminals and mentally ill people from buying guns and bans certain kinds of assault weapons, according to the law’s website.
