An underwhelming amount of Americans are happy about former President Barack Obama being back on the campaign trail, according to a survey released Wednesday.
Rasmussen Reports conducted the poll between Sept. 9 and 10 and found 38 percent of likely voters would be inclined to vote for a candidate Obama endorsed, while 36 percent were less likely to vote for such a candidate. Twenty-four percent said Obama’s support for a candidate would not influence how they would vote.
One question asked respondents whether Obama should take a more public role in the Democratic opposition to President Donald Trump and the Republican Party. Another question gauged whether Obama’s endorsements would impact the likelihood of voting for the candidate.
The poll comes after Obama gave a speech at the University of Illinois on Sept. 7. Obama was critical of Trump’s immigration stance.
“We can’t just put walls up all around America,” Obama said, according to a video Fox News tweeted on Sept. 7. “Walls don’t keep out threats like terrorism or disease.”
Obama also pointed out that he helped with the economy’s recovery after the 2008 financial crisis. He said that his administration helped to end the crisis and covered 20 million Americans with health insurance, The Daily Caller News Foundation previously reported. “I’m glad it’s continued but when you hear about this economic miracle that’s been going on, when the job numbers come out, monthly job numbers, suddenly Republicans are saying, ‘It’s a miracle.’ I have to remind them, actually, those job numbers are the same as they were in 2015 and 2016,” Obama said.
Trump responded to Obama’s speech at a campaign rally in North Dakota on Sept. 7.
“I’m sorry, I watched it, but I fell asleep,” Trump said.
The online and telephone poll surveyed 1,000 likely U.S. voters from across the nation. The margin of error was plus or minus 3 percentage points with a 95 percent confidence level.
