Two U.S. basketball players were stabbed after a fight broke loose with locals in Romania on Saturday.
“The athletes of the cuza sport brăila team were attacked in the first instance by an abuser for no reason or prior conflict,” a Facebook post from the ACS Cuza Sport Braila team said in Romanian on Sunday. “They tried to calm the spirits and leave the location, at which point a group of 8-9 individuals (as shown from the images) pounced on them. We mention that this was the moment when American citizenship players were physically assaulted through punches, legs, thrown chairs and repeated stabbings with a knife.”
Darrell Bowie, 24, and Joseph McClain, 25, received surgery Sunday morning, The Associated Press reported. Bowie had multiple abdominal wounds and his condition is “unpredictable,” while McClain is “stable” and in intensive care after sustaining wounds to the chest, Braila County Emergency Hospital spokeswoman Alina Neacsu told The AP.
Bowie was transported by a helicopter to a larger hospital in Bucharest, Romania’s capital.
“We are a small hospital and it was better for him to be transferred,” Neacsu told The AP.
Bowie is from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and played for Northern Illinois University from 2012 to 2015, according to ESPN. He represented Iowa State University for the 2016-2017 season. (RELATED: Man Shot After Stabbing Two At Dutch Railway Station)
Both men play for local club ACS Cuza Braila, which has four American players on its team, according to The AP.
The incident is still under investigation.
ACS Cuza Sport Braila did not immediately respond to The Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
