Glen Weiss followed his acceptance of the Emmy award for outstanding directing for a variety special with another special event right there on live television – a proposal to his girlfriend, Jan Svendsen.

The live proposal was “a first in Primetime Emmy Awards history,” according to Variety, and came after Weiss thanked his family and friends, then spoke about his recently-departed mother.

“Part of my heart is broken,” said an emotional Weiss. “I don’t think it will ever be repaired. But she’s in me and she always will be.”

“Mom always believed in finding the sunshine in things and she adored my girlfriend, Jan,” he continued as he directed attention to his girlfriend sitting in the audience. “You are the sunshine in my life and Mom was right, don’t ever let go of your sunshine. You wonder why I don’t like to call you my girlfriend? Because I want to call you my wife.”

The crowd erupted as Svendsen shouted “yes” from her seat, but when she came up Weiss ‘officially’ asked her on one knee, presenting the ring that his father “put on my mom’s finger 67 years ago.”

“And to my sisters and brothers, I didn’t swipe it. Dad knows I have it, okay?” he quipped.

“I’d like to thank Glen Weiss’ girlfriend for saying yes. This could have been a very different evening,” said late night host John Oliver later as he accepted his award.  (RELATED: MICHAEL CHE AT EMMYS: ONLY WHITE PEOPLE WHO THANK JESUS AT AWARD SHOWS ARE ‘REPUBLICANS AND EX-CRACKHEADS’)
