While departing the White House Wednesday morning, President Donald Trump says it would be “unfortunate” if Brett Kavanaugh’s accuser refuses to testify before Congress after making a sexual misconduct allegation against the Supreme Court nominee from 36 years ago.

“I would really want to see her. I would want to see what she has to say,” Trump said, speaking of the accuser, Christine Blasey Ford.

Ford is refusing to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee at a hearing Monday and her attorney said that she will not testify until there is a “full investigation by law enforcement officials.”

Trump said it would be “unfortunate” if Ford did not show up: “If she shows up, that would be wonderful. If she doesn’t show up, that would be unfortunate.”

The president told reporters that he would “let the senators take their course.” Trump noted that he believed Kavanaugh was being treated very unfairly.

“They are hurting somebody’s life very badly. It’s very unfair, I think, Justice Kavanaugh has been treated very, very tough and his family, I think it’s a very unfair thing what’s going on,” Trump said.

Trump concluded by saying Kavanaugh is an “extraordinary man” who has an “unblemished record.”

“This is a very tough thing for him and his family and we want to get it over with, but at the same time, we want to give tremendous amounts of time,” the president said.
