CNN senior writer and analyst Harry Enten said Democrats should temper their expectations about flipping Republican Texas Sen. Ted Cruz’s Senate seat and prepare for a loss this November.

Cruz is facing a midterm election challenge from Democratic Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke in Texas and Democrats believe they have a shot at turning the seat blue for the first time in 25 years(RELATED: Texas Sheriff Says Democratic Senate Candidate Beto O’Rourke Needs A ‘History Lesson’ About His Party’s Jim Crow Laws)

Enten said Senate races can’t be won on Democratic hopes alone and then declared it unfortunate that current polls show O’Rourke trailing Cruz by almost 10 points.

“If liberal hopes could drive a Senate campaign to victory, Beto O’Rourke would be winning by 40 points,” Enten said on “New Day” Friday.

“Unfortunately the vast majority of the polls do show [O’Rourke] losing, including a recent Quinnipiac poll that shows him down nine points in the state to Cruz. I should point out most of the other polls show a tighter race, but pretty much all of them show Ted Cruz still leading.”

Host John Berman said the only reason O’Rourke is behind is because the voters he needs to win may or may not show up to the polls.

“The reason Cruz has an advantage there is that the voters that O’Rourke needs to show up, we just don’t know that they will,” Berman declared.

“Specifically Latino voters who tend to lag in turnout in midterm elections and there’s no sign in the polling so far that they will in fact turn out in 2018,” Enten replied.
