Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer insisted Tuesday that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell issue an apology to Christine Blasey Ford, the woman accusing Judge Brett Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct more than 35 years ago.

“Leader McConnell owes an apology to Dr. Ford for labeling her allegations ‘a smear job’ and he should apologize to her immediately,” Schumer said in a speech on the Senate floor. “It is galling for the Republican leader who has done more than maybe anyone else to politicize the Supreme Court nomination process to make these trumped-up, hyperbolic charges of partisanship by Democrats.”

Schumer was referring to a speech that McConnell gave a day earlier on the Senate floor where he criticized Democrats for their “shameful, shameful smear campaign,” saying that it has “hit a new low.”

“This is what the so-called resistance has become, a smear campaign plain and simple, aided and abetted by members of the United States Senate,” McConnell said. (RELATED: Susan Collins Questions The Timing Of Kavanaugh Bombshell)

Wrapping up his speech, the Kentucky senator vowed to hold a vote to confirm Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

“Judge Kavanaugh will be voted on here on the Senate floor,” McConnell continued. “Up or down. In the near future.”
