Louisiana Republican Sen. John Kennedy condemned the way the U.S. Senate has handled Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation process, calling it an “intergalactic freak show” Wednesday.

“I think this whole thing has been a grotesque carnival. It’s been a circus without a tent. It’s been an intergalactic freak show,” Kennedy said to reporters on Capitol Hill.

“It’s been an embarrassment. I think … the Senate has hit rock bottom.”

Kennedy, who has continued to defend Kavanaugh throughout his nomination and confirmation process, told reporters the judge has been treated unfairly and that the rhetoric used to describe him was out of line.

“Look at this fairly. They called him a rich, drunk, lying sexual predator. And then they got mad when he defended himself,” Kennedy continued. (RELATED: Sen. Kennedy On Dems’ Kavanaugh Tactics: ‘I’m Not Sure They Have A Soul’)

The comments come after Kennedy criticized Democrats on Fox News Tuesday night, saying “these are people, I’m not going to name names, but I’m not sure they have a soul. I don’t think their mother breast-fed them — I think they went right to raw meat.”

Republicans hope to have Kavanaugh confirmed as soon as the FBI finishes interviewing other accusers and witnesses in the one-week time frame.
