Democratic Arizona Rep. Tom O’Halleran said Monday that Democrats went “too far” during the confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

The Democrats, I thought, went a little bit too far,” O’Halleran said in an interview with Arizona PBS. “We’re supposed to ask probing questions.”

“I don’t like it, I never did like it when people got up there and pontificated time and time again about their position,” he continued. “This is supposed to be about a discussion back and forth between you and the nominee.”

O’Halleran’s statement comes just a week after a poll showed that roughly 49 percent of Arizona likely voters wanted Kavanaugh confirmed compared with 42 percent opposing, according to The Arizona Republic.

Approximately 50 percent of Arizona’s large Independent voter base supported Kavanaugh’s confirmation, reported The Arizona Republic.

O’Halleran is running for re-election against Republican Wendy Rogers this November.

“We have to find a way to work together, and this back-and-forth between two parties on a continual basis, that’s part of the reform I want to see,” the Democrat said.

O’Halleran is a former police officer and was a Republican until he switched to Independent in 2014. He then joined the Democratic Party in 2016 and took office representing Arizona’s 1st Congressional District in 2017, according to Ballotpedia. Real Clear Politics ranks O’Halleran and Rogers’s race as “Leans Democrat.”
