They say running backs grow on trees.

We’re about to find out if that’s true. First, teams like the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins suffered devastating injuries to star tailbacks. Now, the Atlanta Falcons are going to have to do without arguably the best running back in the NFL for awhile.

The team announced Tuesday that running back Devonta Freeman will be out for next week’s game and will be placed on injured reserve — although the team is apparently prepared to leave open the option for Freeman to return later in the season.

The problem for Atlanta is that it is already late as far as their season is concerned. The Falcons currently sit at 2-4, with a brutal schedule coming up. By the time they start getting some of their stars back, it may well be too late.

The Falcons have to be considered one of the most disappointing teams in the league at this point, although a lot of it can be chalked up to injury.
