Alex Rodriguez may be one of the greatest athletes to play baseball but his instinct about other sports aren’t nearly as spot on.

The 14-time All Star, who spent several seasons with the Texas Rangers, reportedly gave Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes some garbage advice about his future in football. A-Rod recalled the following via Sporting News:

I said, ‘Now listen to me, if you don’t hear one thing that I ever tell you, you better listen to this,’ Rodriguez recounted to Omnisport.

‘There is no money, there is no future, there is no history in football. You have to play baseball!’

‘Well, he reminded me of that recently and, boy, am I glad he did not listen to me!’

Luckily, A-Rod’s advice didn’t phase Mahomes, who grew up around baseball greats. His father, Pat Mahomes Sr., spent 11 years in the major leagues and encouraged his son not to play football for Texas Tech and to play baseball instead. It could’ve happened, as he was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 2014. But he decided to skip that and stick to quarterback instead.

Seeing as Patrick Mahomes has been fundamental in bringing the Chiefs to a 9-1 record and is already being talked about as potential MVP this year, we think he made the right decision.
