Chris Brown is reportedly facing criminal charges for illegally owning an exotic monkey as a pet and could face up to six months in jail for the crime.

According to documents from the Los Angeles City attorney’s office obtained by TMZ, two counts of having a restricted species without a permit have been filed against the 29-year-old rapper. (RELATED: It’s Probably Not A Good Sign That This Is The Only Person Defending Conor McGregor)

The crime carries a maximum sentence of six months behind bars.

The “Loyal” rapper made headlines last Christmas when he posted a video of the gift he got his daughter, Royalty: a baby capuchin monkey.

People blasted the star on social media, calling out the performer for putting his daughter in danger and suggesting that the animal belonged in the wild and not as a pet. (RELATED: Here Are Some Photos Of Chris Brown Putting His Hands On Another Woman)

Apparently some even notified the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, who then started an investigation into the matter.

It was later discovered that Brown didn’t have a permit for the exotic animal, so authorities got a search warrant to look for the monkey. Brown then voluntarily agreed to surrender his daughter’s pet.

He is now due back in court in February to formally face the charges and learn his fate.

It is only the latest run-in with the law for Brown. Earlier this year, he was arrested for felony battery charges for allegedly “sucker punching” a photographer in Tampa in April 2017.
