Republican Florida Sen. Marco Rubio rebuked Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren and other leading presidential contenders who have endorsed abolishing the electoral college.

In a Tuesday morning tweet storm, the 2016 presidential candidate accused 2020 Democrats of trampling on America’s constitutional norms, arguing that the proposal is politically motivated. (RELATED: Democratic Lawmaker Introduces Constitutional Amendment To Abolish The Electoral College)

“The Democrat plan to get rid of the Electoral College has nothing to do with making sure every vote counts,” Rubio said. “It’s about diminishing the electoral power of what liberals arrogantly call the ‘flyover states’ & of Americans they habitually disrespect as uneducated & backwards.”

Rubio’s tweets came in response to Warren’s call for the elimination of the electoral college in an MSNBC town hall. The elimination of the electoral college has been a rallying cry for Democrats ever since 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton lost the electoral college, despite winning the popular vote. (RELATED: The 2020 Democratic Field Grows As Hillary Considers Another Run)

Twelve states have passed laws mandating that their electoral college votes go to the winner of the national popular vote, although all of them are solid blue states.
