Several people were injured Monday night after a group of 300 people broke out into a stampede during a memorial for rapper Nipsey Hussle.

Meghan Aguilar, a spokesperson for Los Angeles Police Department, said there was “mass panic and chaos” beginning after 8 p.m. outside of Hussle’s clothing store, according to CBS Los Angeles.

It is unclear what caused the mass of mourners to suddenly take off running, but TMZ reported people heard sounds similar to gunshots. LA police reported that they found no evidence of gunshot wounds on anybody injured. Initial reports of people being stabbed turned out to be false. Two witnesses told CBS Los Angeles that a fight broke out between two groups, but there isn’t a clear link between the fight and the stampede.

At least two people were critically injured during the stampede and taken to the hospital, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. “The majority of injuries were related to ‘trample injuries’ sustained when the crowd rushed out,” the fire department said in a statement.

People had gathered on off in the following days after Hussle’s death. Candles and flowers had been left in front of the Marathon Clothing store where Hussle was shot to death Sunday.
