We have more steam behind the idea that Graham Mertz will be the Badgers starting quarterback in 2019.

Right now, Mertz is locked into a heated competition with junior Jack Coan, who started several games in 2018 with very mixed results.

USA Today wrote Wednesday that it’s their “best guess” that Mertz gets the start ahead of Coan, and explained in part, “the expectation is that he’ll be given every shot to become the rare true freshman to start under center for Paul Chryst and the Badgers.”

You’re damn right the expectation is for him to get every rep possible to start week one. I’ve been saying it for months, and it seems like nobody has really wanted to listen. (RELATED: Should Graham Mertz Start At Quarterback For The Wisconsin Badgers In 2019?)

Mertz is the future of Wisconsin football. That’s not me slamming Coan. I’ll be confident if he enters the game because the freshman phenom goes down.

Now, we know that Coan is getting the reps first right now, but Coan is right behind him. It’s unclear what kind of gap is between the two, but I hope it’s not much.

I won’t be able to stomach another eight win season. I just won’t be able to do it. Watching passes like the one below at the 28-second mark give me hope that the future is very bright.

Let’s hope like hell Mertz is correct and my predictions turn out to be accurate. If they are, then I really like the team we’re going to have in 2019.
