Shawn Oakman had to spend a ton of money during his successful defense against a sexual assault charge.

The former Baylor superstar football player was acquitted back in February on a sexual assault charge that he was arrested for back in 2016. It caused him to miss the NFL draft, and likely ended his football career. He also spent a stunning amount of money along the way.

“I went through two paid lawyers. The second lawyer, it got all the way to trial. The week before she needed $60k just to step in the courtroom. I already gave her $60k … but she needed $60k just to step in the courtroom, so she dropped my case. I didn’t have it. That’s when I got a public defender,” the former Baylor star said during a special for Ben Raymond called, “Shawn Oakman: The Rebirth,” according to TMZ Sports.

He also added he had to sell a bowl game ring to help pay for legal expenses. You can watch a video of his comments below.

What a horrific situation for Oakman. He was absolutely going to be in the NFL coming out of Baylor, and instead he spent years fighting to stay out of prison.

I can’t imagine how terrifying it must be to be on trial for something you didn’t do. The question now is whether or not he gets a shot at the NFL.

Unfortunately, I doubt it, which is just awful for him. He hasn’t played a snap of football in years, and the timespan for a shot in the NFL is already incredibly short for guys coming straight out of college.

I wish him the best, and it’s a tragic situation. Unfortunately, I don’t see him ever playing on an NFL field. What an absolute damn shame for the man.
