Brooklyn Nets star D’Angelo Russell is in a bit of hot water after allegedly being caught in possession of weed at LaGuardia Airport.

The New York Post reported the following Thursday afternoon:

Russell, 23, was headed to his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, when airport workers found the weed during a routine search. Investigators found a can of Arizona Iced Tea with a secret compartment inside containing the drugs.

“We got a call from TSA about D’Angelo’s bag for allegedly marijuana. PAPD units responded, and they issued him a summons,” a Port Authority spokesperson told The Post. “He was charged with possession of marijuana under 50 grams.

Why, Russell? Why? I’m not a drug expert by any metric or measure, but I have seen the show “Justified” on FX, which takes place in Kentucky.

Judging from the show, it’s not too hard to get weed in Kentucky at all. Why would he allegedly try to sneak it through an airport in a fake Arizona Iced Tea can? (RELATED: Damian Lillard Hits Game Winner Over The Oklahoma City Thunder)

At the very least, put it in your checked bag. Carrying it through the TSA search seems like a rookie move. Again, not a big drug guy, but I’ve seen enough movies and TV to know this situation could probably have gone much better.

Is this going to derail his NBA career? Of course not. It’s just weed. It’s not like he was busted with machine guns and meth. It’s a drug that’s becoming increasingly more mainstream and the laws regulating it continue to get more relaxed across the nation.

Still, it might have been a bit wiser for Russell to not try to get it through airport security. Just use some common sense next time.

I’m sure the Nets and the NBA won’t care much at all, but it’s just an embarrassing look, especially when he tried to sneak it through in a fake Arizona Iced Tea can. Not a great look at all for the young star.
