President Donald Trump said in a tweet Saturday that he favors abortions only in cases of rape, incest, or to protect the life of a mother.

The president’s tweet summarized his stance on abortion following a variety of restrictive abortion measures passed earlier in May. Trump compared his abortion stances to those of former President Ronald Reagan, saying while he is “strongly pro-life,” he favors abortion exceptions to be made in certain instances.

“As most people know, and for those who would like to know,” Trump tweeted, “I am strongly Pro-Life, with the three exceptions – Rape, Incest and protecting the Life of the mother – the same position taken by Ronald Reagan. We have come very far in the last two years with 105 wonderful new…..”

Trump added that the pro-life movement has “come very far” in the past two years with the addition of 105 federal judges and two Supreme Court justices, as well a “positive attitude” toward life.

He mentioned the Mexico City Policy, sometimes known as the “Global Gag Rule,” which he reinstated when he took office in 2017. The policy prevents foreign organizations who receive U.S. aid from promoting or advertising abortion. Established by former President Ronald Reagan in 1984, former President Barack Obama rescinded the policy in 2009.

“….Federal Judges (many more to come), two great new Supreme Court Justices, the Mexico City Policy, and a whole new & positive attitude about the Right to Life. The Radical Left, with late term abortion (and worse), is imploding on this issue. We must stick together and Win….”

Trump also encouraged pro-life Americans to unite as the 2020 presidential elections approaches rather than lose “hard fought gains for Life.”

“….for Life in 2020. If we are foolish and do not stay UNITED as one, all of our hard fought gains for Life can, and will, rapidly disappear!”

The president’s tweets come after a week filled with Republican-backed restrictive abortion legislation. After passing a heartbeat bill Friday, Missouri joined Georgia, Mississippi, Kentucky, Alabama and Ohio in enacting further limits on abortion. Republican Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey signed H.B. 314 into law Wednesday. The Alabama law is set to take effect in six months and is one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the U.S., with a near total ban on abortions that makes no exceptions for cases of rape or incest. However, the law makes an exception if the mother’s health is in serious danger or if the unborn baby has a lethal anomaly.
