Democratic California Rep. Jackie Speier boasted to an applauding audience about having had an abortion, in a Tuesday speech in front of the Supreme Court.

“I’m here to say you know me,” Speier told the adoring crowd. “I am one of the one-in-four women in this country who have had an abortion.”
“We are not strangers,” she continued. “We are wives, we are mothers, we are sisters, and we will not be stigmatized!”
Speier previously admitted to having an abortion during a heated debate on the topic in 2011. Since entering Congress over a decade ago, Speier has been an ardent supporter of abortion rights, and said Monday that women were being dehumanized in the increasingly intense debate. “I think that women are being depicted as chattel,” she said Tuesday in an appearance on CNN.
Several states have passed laws this year that restrict or ban abortion. The strictest of them passed in Alabama, which banned nearly all abortions, including for pregnancies that result from rape or incest.
None of these laws have gone into effect, but conservatives are hopeful that the conservative majority on the Supreme Court will overturn Roe v. Wade.
