U.S. women’s soccer star Megan Rapinoe responded to criticism over her past statements Wednesday, firing back at critics who question her love of country.

“I think that I’m particularly and uniquely and very deeply American,” Rapinoe said, according to ESPN. “If we want to talk about the ideals that we stand for, all the songs and the anthem and sort of what we were founded on, I think I’m extremely American.”

Rapinoe said she does not believe her detractors are giving her a fair shake.

“I think for the detractors, I would have them look hard into what I’m actually saying and the actions that I’m doing,” Rapinoe said. “Maybe you don’t agree with every single way that I do it, and that can be discussed. I know that I’m not perfect.

An outspoken political activist, Rapinoe has made several comments widely perceived as critical of the United States, saying that she will probably never sing the national anthem again, and refusing to stand for it before matches. (RELATED: U.S. Soccer Star Megan Rapinoe Out Against England)

Rapinoe has also made several inflammatory statements about President Donald Trump, accusing him of bigotry, and saying she would not be “going to the F*king White House,” should the U.S. Women’s National Team go on to win the World Cup. Trump responded to Rapinoe’s criticism in a series of tweets last week, chiding Rapinoe for her statements and inviting the team to visit the White House regardless of the outcome of the World Cup.

“I am a big fan of the American Team, and Women’s Soccer, but Megan should WIN first before she TALKS! Finish the job!” Trump tweeted. “I am now inviting the TEAM, win or lose. Megan should never disrespect our Country, the White House, or our Flag, especially since so much has been done for her & the team. Be proud of the Flag that you wear. The USA is doing GREAT!”
