Former congressman John Delaney dropped out of the 2020 presidential race Friday morning.
“It has been a privilege to campaign for the Democratic nomination for President, but it is clear that God has a different purpose for me at this moment in time,” Delaney said in a statement.
“I leave this race with a profound sense of gratitude to the voters who shared with me their hopes and concerns for our magnificent country, in admiration for the other contenders for the nomination and proud of the work we did to change the debate.”

Delaney previously was a Maryland congressman from 2013 to 2019. He announced his bid for the 2020 presidency in a Washington Post op-ed. The former congressman missed the cutoff for several debates, and failed to gain traction in the polls.
An Axios report from July 2019 alleged that Delaney’s senior team requested he drop out of the race by mid-August. The campaign disputed this report. (RELATED: Low-Polling Democrat Challenges Bernie Sanders On Medicare For All: ‘Why Do We Gotta Be The Party Of Taking Something Away?’)
“Never bet against the United States of America. This is a remarkable nation full of wonderful and patriotic people. People who love their country, their neighbors and their families,” Delaney continued in his statement Friday.
“Onward and upward and God Bless America.”
