Former Wisconsin superstar receiver Quintez Cephus isn’t sure Jack Coan can continue to be the Badgers’ starting quarterback.
Cephus talked with the media Tuesday ahead of his NFL combine work and was asked if Coan could keep his starting job from the freshman phenom. His answer was very telling and is bound to raise more questions than it answers. (RELATED: David Hookstead Is The True King In The North When It Comes To College Football)

He told the media, “That’s a battle they’re going to have to have. I’m not sure.”
Someone asked Cephus if Jack Coan was gonna be able to hold off Graham Mertz this fall for the QB job.
He laughed and then said, “That’s a battle they’re going to have to have. I’m not sure.”

Well, folks, start your engines! Here we go! The best receiver on the team last season wouldn’t commit to his former passer as the starting quarterback going forward!
That’s not a ringing endorsement for Coan at all. In fact, it’s the exact opposite. If Cephus thought Coan was good enough to hold off Mertz, he’d just say it.
I’ve heard from a number of people that Mertz has shown off some unreal skills in practice, but just needs to get a little more refined.
There’s a reason he was such a big time recruit, and it’s not because he can’t play. It’s because he’s a straight baller.
Spring practice will be here soon, and it sounds like Mertz might be about to take Coan’s starting job. I like Coan. I really do.
I think he’s much better than people think he is. I’m just not sure his ceiling is higher than Coan’s.
